Yes, I bought them mainly for the illustrations! The texts are very uneven, as far as I can see - I've not read more than odd parts of each.Philip Wilkinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04893714514416441572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4228081722487474323.post-3414970404498669402015-07-19T19:51:34.197+01:002015-07-19T19:51:34.197+01:00Just about the time Griggs visited Amberley, Edwar...Just about the time Griggs visited Amberley, Edward Stott ARA, who had been the leading light in a significant group of artists settled there, died. A stained glass window in the church commemorates him and a large, unavoidable monument stands over his grave in the churchyard. Knowing some of the places Lucas mentions, I am surprised how much he can write without actually DESCRIBING the place! - let alone the buildings. And most of his history is bunk, I'm afraid - very dated, if history CAN be out of date! I imagine the best bit in Lucas's other book must be the pictures: it must be difficult to illustrate some of the village churches in that area without being inspired and evocative. One or two good views in the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne of St Mary's in Old Town.
