One in the main street, so impossible to get a long view: one behind locked railings and surrounded by other buildings. You were lucky to get access & provide photos. Interesting contrast between rough, primitive appearance and sophisticated building technique - lots of other examples, not excluding Brixworth and Weybourne, North Norfolk. With some, I feel the "rough, primitive" was more an artistic ambition, not the result of imperfect technique. "Non-radial voussoirs", for instance, not restricted to the first phase of AS stone building - sorry to go on, but have compiled 4 booklets on AS architecture, with more than enough material for a 5th. Not enough
effort seems to have been made to distinguish the different Anglo-Saxon periods - "9th century" not very precise, and very often church guides, etc. plump for such dates on very slender evidence. I almost visited Wing once: some day, perhaps... I am also glad you were so kindly treated.

But you know, it doesn't hurt--and maybe even would help--to first come to the church to attend the service, and then perhaps to look around. These wonderful buildings won't stay standing for another 1000 years without congregations.Even visitors make a difference. I think we have to deem it successful! I was lucky enough to see the magnificent, huge crypt at St Nicholas Church in Ghent a couple of weeks ago which is a real wonder.
CLICK HERE for Bazza’s fabulous Blog ‘To Discover Ice’bazzahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14794010156639774028noreply@blogger.com
